A cracker of a field for the season opener in Monza

The Drexler Formula Cup will kick off the new circuit racing season next weekend (30.04.-02.05.21) on the 5.793-kilometer Formula 1 track in Monza. In the royal park the new motorsport year begins for further championships. With the TCR Italy Touring Car Championship, the Mini Challenge, as well as the Clio Cup Europe and the Italiano Gran Turismo Sprint and Italiano Sport Prototypi, some top-class series are at the start. Making its debut in Italy is the new BMW M2 CS Racing Cup Italy, which is intended to cause a sensation as a one-make cup. As was the case last year, the Drexler Formula Cup is teaming up with the Top Jet F.2000 Italy Trophy and can boast a record field of over 40 entries before the start of the season. "We were almost taken aback by the interest shown by the teams," says coordinator Franz Wöss. Motorsport is still affected by the Covid 19 pandemic, as is general public life. Restrictions in travel and hygiene regulations of the organizers determine the scenery like last season. Many restrictions lead to the fact that one cannot expect consistently very well filled starting fields.

The Drexler Formula Cup, as it is established today, was launched in 2013 as the Remus Formula Cup following the "demise" of the Austria Formula 3 Cup. In the meantime, the series has established itself as a platform for Formula racing in Central Europe, particularly for Formula 3, but also for Formula Renault and Formula 4. The starting field in the Drexler Formula Cup is headed by defending champion Sandro Zeller (Jo Zeller Racing). Thomas Aregger (Franz Wöss Racing) is making his second attempt this season to successfully stand up to his Swiss compatriot. In Formula 3, there are three young hotshots to look forward to. Matej Kacovsky (CZE) is at the start for the HKC Academy. At Franz Wöss Racing, Stefan Fürtbauer (AUT) will be behind the wheel of a Formula 3 racing car for the first time. Oliver Michl (HUN) has moved up from Formula Renault to Formula 3. He will be driving for the Gender Racing Team in 2021. In Formula 4, two competitors from last year will meet again. Patrick Schober (AUT) wants to fight for the title with the support of his Procar Motorsport team. Defending champion Benjamin Berta (HUN) is likely to be the experienced opponent to be expected. In total, the drivers in Formula 3, Formula Renault and Formula 4 will be fighting for the cups and trophies in five classification classes. In addition, the Horag Swiss Formula 3 Cup is integrated for the participants from Switzerland. Last season, the race wins in Monza by Sandro Zeller and Thomas Aregger remained in Swiss hands. The competitors from Italian Formula 3 should by no means be underestimated in 2021. The race starts in Monza on Friday (30.04.) with free practice at 12.45 hrs, followed by qualifying at 17.35 hrs. The 1st race will then take place on Saturday (01.05.) at 12.45 hrs. On Sunday (02.05.) the Drexler Formula Cup will open the race day at 9.15 a.m. with the 2nd run.
