Drexler-Automobile Formula Cup

After the season finale in Mugello, the honors for the winners and placers in the Drexler Formula Cup were on the agenda. Piero Longhi of the TopJet F2000 Trophy and Franz Wöss of the Drexler Formula Cup had once again invited guests to Italy for this end-of-season event. The chosen ambience did full justice to the occasion. The trophies were presented at the Dallara Academy in Varano de` Melegari. First there was the opportunity to visit the Dallara exhibition in the presentation rooms. The tour gave an insight into the history of the globally active vehicle manufacturer, which has made its mark on Formula 3 in particular for over 30 years. Dallara won national Formula 3 championships all over Europe and helped very many drivers to enter Formula 1, with Bernd Schneider (1987), Jean Alesi (1987), Jos Verstappen (1993), Nick Heidfeld (1997), Lewis Hamilton (2005), Nico Hülkenberg (2008), Daniel Ricciardo (2009) or Lance Stroll (2016) and Lando Norris (2017) being celebrated as Formula 3 champions. The list of well-known names is very long.

Dallara was founded in 1972 by Gian Paolo Dallara. Initially, Dallara designed chassis for sports cars and hillclimbs. Then he started designing for Formula 3 race cars,later added chassis for Formula 3000 and Formula 1. This was followed by stints in the Indy Racing League, as well as Formula V8 3.5 up to the Formula 1 junior category of GP2. From 2000, Dallara increased its involvement in prototype racing and developed the Dallara P217 for the LMP2 class. Sandro Zeller emerged as the overall winner in Formula 3. The Swiss driver clinched his seventh consecutive title with an outstanding record. Second place went to David Richert from Canada. The newcomer to Formula 3 consistently scored podium finishes and clearly relegated Tomas Chabr (CZE) to third place. In the Formula 3 Open classification, there was also a dominator this year. His name is Benjamin Berta from Hungary, who at the age of 19 drove away from the competition. Paolo Brajnik (SRB) took second place ahead of Janos Magyar (HUN). In the Drexler Formula Renault Cup Dr.Norbert Groer (AUT) was able to defend his title and won in the end in front of his teammate Andre Petropoulos (GER) and the Italian Fabio Turchetto. In Formula 4, the overall victory went to Hungary. Zeno Kovacs won the junior category ahead of Vojtech Birgus (SVK) and Tommaso Lovati (ITA).
