Season start in Tuscany
22 March 2023
Drexler - Automotive Formula Cup - Mugello (ITA)
The Drexler Formula Cup starts its 10th season in Mugello. At the end of 2012, the FIA announced the end of the national Formula 3 championships. One of the leading teams at that time was called Austria Formula 3 Cup, which had to stop its sporting ambitions virtually overnight. But there were patrons and sponsors of the Formula 3 scene even back then. The Remus Formula Cup was the next step. After that, with the support of Drexler-Automotive GmbH from Salzweg in Bavaria, the current Formula Sprint Series was successfully continued and established as one of the most attractive Formula Series in Europe. Due to the cooperation with the ZINOX F2000 Trophy, which presents the Formula 3 scene in Italy, the Drexler Formula Cup can also offer a top-class calendar this season. The first stop this year is Mugello (March 24-25, 2023). Last year, the 5.245-kilometer race track in Tuscany hosted the finale, and if you will, the start of the season fits in seamlessly.
For the first time, the Drexler Formula Cup will be taking part in the Creventic 24H Series, which is staging the 12H race at Mugello. "We are again hoping for a great field of starters, although the early start to the season means that there will still be a few more participants in the course of the season," says coordinator Franz Wöss, looking ahead. Both sprint races over the respective 25-minute distance are eagerly awaited. Since this year, the Drexler Formula Cup has been running with a new class division. "It will be interesting to see how the Formula 3 cars, divided into the Formula 3 Cup and the Formula 3 Trophy do. In the Formula 3 Cup, you can use slightly more powerful engines, but the cars are also heavier," adds Franz Wöss. In any case, there could be some candidates for victory. Seven-time champion Sandro Zellerr (Jo Zeller Racing) should be mentioned here. He will again be up against Benjamin Berta, who has switched to the Franz Wöss Racing team for this season. Japanese Juju Noda (Noda Racing) will take the plunge into Formula 3. She was still successful last season with the Formula Regional. The spearhead in the Italian camp is likely to be Paolo Brajnik (NV Racing). However, he has strong competitors from Italy's Formula 3 squad in Bernardo Pellegrini and Dino Rasero. The Autodromo Del Mugello is not only known as a motorcycle race track with MotoGP. In 2020, Formula 1 raced for the first time on the ultra-fast circuit otherwise used by Ferrari for testing purposes. On Friday (24.03.), the Drexler Automotive Formula Cup will have free practice at 10.00 and 13.50 hrs, before qualifying at 17.00 hrs. The 1st run will take place on Saturday (25.03.) at 9.00 am. At 17.40 o'clock the second run goes over the stage.
