No LEEB circuit trophy at the Red Bull Ring

Like in 2020 there will be no LEEB Rundstreckentrophy at the Red Bull Ring this year. On Friday race director Gerhard Leeb pulled the ripcord. The preparations for the traditional event, which takes place annually in mid-May in the run-up to the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Moto GP, had been underway for a long time. This means that the Drexler Formula Cup will no longer be held in its 2nd round. The currently new and again intensified developments in the Covid-19 pandemic left the LEEB Group no other choice in its decision. This is because almost 90 percent of the participants come from neighboring countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Poland, Italy, Switzerland and Germany. The development and enforcement of entry and exit regulations are no longer predictable at all. "I think Gerhard Leeb did not make his decision easy. Unfortunately, the infection figures in the countries in the middle of Europe have gone really high, even if we all had more hope on this subject in the spring of this year," says Franz Wöss of the Drexler Formula Cup. He is now trying to find an alternative date together with other racing series, but this is proving enormously difficult when it comes to planning racing events in 2021. "We have to try everything now and will get together. I have already made many telephone calls in the short time available," says Franz Wöss.

Formula 3 remains the driving force

Drexler Automotive Formula Cup 2021

After a successful season last year, but a really difficult one due to Corona, the Drexler Formula Cup is ready to start in 2021. The season will kick off on the first weekend in May, when the Formula racing series meets at the Formula 1 circuit in Monza, Italy. "We're hoping for a great grid in Italy. To what extent the travel regulations will affect motorsport, as they did last year, remains to be seen. The local organizers will prepare everything as best as possible to meet the hygiene and safety regulations," says coordinator Franz Wöss. A total of five classification classes will be integrated into the Drexler Formula Cup in 2021. This wide range of possible applications has always aroused interest among teams and drivers. From Formula 3, to Formula Renault and Formula 4, the established classifications are included.

Season starts in early May in Monza (ITA)

The Drexler Formula Cup has once again rearranged its calendar for this year. The opening event in Mugello (ITA) planned for March 28th has been cancelled. The currently tightened regulations and travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic prevent the start of the season in Italy. As in previous years, the Drexler Formula Cup has seven race events in its sights. At this point, there seems to be no doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic will remain the determining factor in season planning and its execution for 2021. "At this stage, we have six events underpinned and are still in discussions with race tracks and promoters. Never before has a season been as difficult to plan as this year," says coordinator Franz Wöss. This one could be similarly difficult, but at least with some hurdles like last year.

Race calendar for 2021 picks up speed

Drexler Automotive Formula Cup

As in previous years, the Drexler Formula Cup has its sights set on seven race events. There is no doubt that the Corona pandemic will continue to be the determining factor in the planning for 2021. "At the present time, we have confirmed five events and are in talks with other race tracks," says coordinator Franz Wöss. The season could be as difficult as last year. In 2020, the Drexler Formula Cup staged six race weekends with the support of the organizers as well as the participants and sponsors. Recall that there were some racing series in Europe that were much harder hit by Corona. The season opener this year is scheduled for the last weekend of March in Mugello (ITA). After that, it's off to Monza (ITA) in early May. The Red Bull Ring (AUT) will be a guest at the end of May. The Salzburgring (AUT) will follow in mid-June. In keeping with tradition, the team plans to race at Brno (CZE) on the first weekend in September. "We are still in close contact with the Hungaroring, Spa, Hockenheim, Lausitzring and Most in order to be able to fix two more race weekends," says Franz Wöss. The already fixed race tracks impress with their attractiveness. With Mugello, Monza and the Red Bull Ring alone, three Formula 1 circuits are included. Conceptually, the Drexler Formula Cup will continue to cooperate with the F2000 Italian Formula Trophy and the FIA CEZ.
